The experience behind the lilac bush

08.08.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Before this year, I had never given lilac bushes much notice, and neither had my kids. But now they are one of our favorites. Lilac bushes have become a meaningful and special symbol in our family.

In 1892 my great-great-grandparents, Swen and Thilda, along with a few of their children, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Swen was the first of the family to be introduced to the gospel and to have a desire to join the church. At first, Thilda was not happy about it at all, but that changed after Thilda had an experience behind a lilac bush.

One of her sons, Helge, wrote about Thilda’s conversion: “I still remember when Mormon missionaries came to our home. Father seemed a little interested in their teaching, but mother was hesitant until one time when they came back to talk to father. She went outside, and kneeling behind a lilac bush, she prayed that she might know if their message was from God. After that, she never faltered but remained faithful and true to the gospel all her life.”

This spring, we cut some fresh lilac’s from a bush in my sister’s yard and took them to Thilda’s grave. For several weeks after this experience, while the lilacs were still in bloom, anytime we would see a lilac bush, my 3 year old daughter would point to it and say “that’s the bush were Thilda prayed!”

There are a couple of things that I really love about this. I love that my children feel a real connection to Thilda and they are learning more about her life. I also love that the lilac bush has become a symbol of receiving revelation from Heavenly Father.

I hope that this story from our family history helps my children to know that Heavenly Father was involved in Thilda’s life and that they should seek and expect similar experiences in their own lives.

Recording Personal Experiences with the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Something that has become really important to me is intentionally having experiences with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and recording those experiences -both for our future selves, and also for our posterity.

An idea that came to me a couple years ago was to be intentional about recording and compiling my kids’ spiritual experiences.

I feel strongly that record keeping is a valuable tool, especially when it comes to building and maintaining a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the biggest tools, if not the biggest, that Satan will use against us is to try to get us to forget Jesus Christ, to forget our testimonies, to forget the experiences that we have had with the gospel. If he can get us to forget, he gains great power and ability to lead us away.

I have been recording these experiences for my children (and as they get older I encourage them to write them down themselves) because I want them to have a record. Like Nephi, in The Book of Mormon, I want my children to be able to look back over their lives and see how the tender mercies of the Lord were over them, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.

Relationships are built by having experiences together. I want my children to not only build a strong relationship with God, but also to remember those experiences that have built that relationship.

Remembering the Pioneers

07.17.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

If you’re a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints then you know why July 24th is important. It’s Pioneer Day! This is a day when we celebrate the pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley.

After many years of persecution and being forced from their homes, all for exercising their right to believe in God and worship Him how they wanted to, the Latter-day Saints finally found a place where they could settle down and call home. This was exciting and significant. It’s worth celebrating.

Their trials and hardships are also worth remembering and regarding with deep respect. We stand on the shoulders of giants – faithful men, women, and children that were willing to give up everything and pave the way for us to have the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

I would encourage you to spend some time this month researching and learning more about your own pioneer ancestors, if you have any. And if not, learn about the pioneers in general.

Invite your children to join you. This can be a lot of fun! Create tangible experiences. This is the second year that my children and I have spent the month of July learning about the pioneers and we have had amazing experiences. Head over to @goodmorningshelly on Instagram if you want to see what we’ve been up to and get some ideas for yourself. 🙂
