The Keeping Quilt

06.04.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Hey! My name is Jessie & I’ve been sharing lots of family history goodness over at @missgenealogy for the last few years. I’ve joined up with the @seasonforfamily team & couldn’t be more excited. One of my passions is teaching my kids about the importance of their heritage & one of the ways I do that is through stories! I’ve curated quite the collection & it just keeps growing (there are so many good books out there!) so I’ll pop in every now & then with some of the best.

Today’s pick: The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco; have you read it? It’s a beautiful story with equally beautiful illustrations & tells of the importance of family, heirlooms & memories in (you guessed it!) a beautiful way. Do you have a special item that has been passed down through the generations? We’d love to hear about it!

Digitizing

06.02.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

This weeks #familyhistoryonthesabbath idea is coming from the discussions that have been going on in our Season for Family Facebook Group! If you haven’t joined, please join us! We are hoping that it will be a great place for sharing ideas, getting help, helping others and just cheering each other on in our family history journey! To join us, visit —> facebook.com/groups/seasonforfamily

There are several women on the Facebook Group including myself that are working on digitizing! This includes scanning photos, newspaper clippings, documents, recipes, etc. This is a GREAT way to participate in family history. It also does not have to be overly difficult or time consuming. Did you know that you can even scan documents with your phone??

Later today in the Facebook Group, I am going to show you my “station” that I have set up in my room. I have tons to digitize with not a lot of time available, so my strategy has been to create a small space that is set up and ready to go. This way, I can sit down and work on it only 10-15 minutes at a time, making it FIT into my busy schedule.

Share your digitizing tips and tricks below! What scanners or apps do you use? Do you have any questions about digitizing?

Remember, every week we will share a simple idea for bringing family history into your home on the Sabbath day. We would LOVE for you to share your ideas, tag @seasonforfamily in your Instagram post and use the hashtag #familyhistoryonthesabbath

To help us not be on social media all Sunday, we will share your ideas on the following Saturday night or Sunday morning in our stories. They will then be available for viewing on Sunday.

family history stereotypes

The Finding Process- Michelle Franzoni Thorley

I have an interesting relationship with family history. I feel we both share something in common. As a minority, only child, and daughter of a single mother, many people have put stereotypes upon me. They underestimate me, discount my abilities and power. I feel family history has had the same stereotypes placed upon it. People often underestimate the power and abilities family history has to change the world. We both may seem meager and easily dismissed. Well I’m gonna tell you, you are wrong about both of us! I am more than my stereotypes, so don’t count me out. And if you have old and outdated misconceptions about what family history is, I challenge you to double check yourself and give family history another chance because it has the power to change your life and also the world.
