How to Bring Your Ancestors to Life with Your Family

06.10.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Summertime is the perfect time to bring family history alive for your children.  Check out my first post on “Bringing Your Ancestors to Life” HERE. I want to walk you through my process to give you some ideas and to help you get started.

Step one:

Look up a particular ancestor on Family Search or in a family history book, journal, etc.  If you don’t have any stories of deceased ancestors, then ask your living parents (or grandparents) about their own lives.

Step two:

As you read about their life, just jot down little bits about them.  Did they have any particular hobbies?  What was their profession?  Did they like a particular food?  Were they from another country?  Did they have a certain skill set or talent?

Step three:

Take those pieces of information and brainstorm some ideas for how you could tangibly re-create those experiences for yourself and your children.

I’ll give you an example from how I put this process into action a few months ago.  I read in a family history book that my great-great grandmother, Bothilda Pehrsdotter, became expert in carding wool, spinning yarn, and knitting (among other things) when she was a young girl.

When I read this bit of information about her, I decided that it would be fun to learn those skills.  I bought some wool (straight off the sheep), some wool carders, and a drop spindle.  Over the next 6 weeks or so, we carded the wool, spun it into yarn, and then knitted (with the help of a loom) a hat for each of us.

Before starting this process, we had no idea what we were doing… but with the help of youtube videos, we figured it out. 🙂

Not only did we come away from this project with some new skills, but also with a deeper connection to Bothilda.

Is there something from one of your ancestor’s lives that you could use to create a tangible experience for your children?  It doesn’t have to take multiple weeks like this example I shared.  Any little thing that brings your ancestors to life for your children is a win and helps to link generations together.

Letters: Preserving our words

Woman Looking At Letter In Keepsake Box On Desk

Recently we were packing up some things in our home and I came across some letters and notes that my husband and I had written to each other when we were dating and first married. I found myself tearful as I remembered those sweet time we had together; just the two of us. I found myself falling in love all over again. I was so grateful I had preserved these special memories to visit again and again.

This Sunday for #familyhistoryonthesabbath, I encourage you to take some time to find old letters, cards, or even journals to read or share with your family. Maybe you have a letter from your grandma when you were a child, an old birthday card, old e-mails stored on your e-mail account, love notes, missionary letters, or if you are lucky letters written from ancestors.

Get them out! Read through them! How can you preserve these letters for the next generation? When I was a teenager I glued all the letters and cards I had saved (starting at my baptism) into a large notebook with blank pages. When I was feeling down or struggling I would read through them and remember how much I was loved and all the good that people saw in me.

Now, get out some new paper and write your own letters as a family! Sunday is the perfect day to connect with those you love. Who in your family needs to hear from you? Who might be lonely or struggling? What grandparents need a sweet picture and note from a grandchild to hang on their fridge? What child needs to hear how much you love them?

Don’t let these precious memories and feelings get forgotten! Family history is about connecting with our family; past and present.

When have the written words of others blessed your life or your families?

Remember, every week we will share a simple idea for bringing family history into your home on the Sabbath day. If you have ideas that you would like us to share, tag @seasonforfamily in your post and use the hashtag #familyhistoryonthesabbath If you have a private account, screenshot your post and send it to us, or simply message us what you are doing and we will share your message!

Your Sacrifice for Family History

06.08.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Young woman working on her laptop and cellphone.

“I invite you to prayerfully consider what kind of sacrifice–and preferably a sacrifice of time–you can make to do more family history and temple work this year.” ~President Russell M. Nelson

Speech given at Roots Tech Family Discovery Day

I love this quote because sometimes we concentrate more on the sacrifice than on the blessings and the good we are doing. At times my schedule has been too busy to do family history or temple ordinances and then I decide to just spend 10 minutes on it. I find myself an hour later feeling peace and comfort and no regret. I have had blessings and even spiritual growth in my life by the work and sacrifices I have made.
