Selfie with an Ancestor
This is a post where you will give a very brief description of a connection that you have with a specific ancestor. The description can be a short personal story, a poem, an answer to prayer, something you learned from them, something fascinating about their life that has impacted yours, etc. The intention of these posts are to be short and sweet, and most importantly to inspire others to find connections with their own ancestors.
Entry Requirements:
- Keep text submitted to approximately 1500 characters or less. We can be flexible, but entries longer than 1500 characters may not be considered.
- Submit a SIMPLE image of you holding a photo, temple card, or written name of your Ancestor. Please submit a color photo that has NOT been edited, we will edit it to Black & White to fit the style of our page. Photo Tips: Try taking the photo in natural lighting with a simple background, but the background is not as important as the lighting. Make sure that the photo is in focus. *See sample photos below.
- Send entries to hello@seasonforfamily.com — Use “Selfie with an Ancestor” as your subject line. In the email body, include your Name, Instagram Handle, text and photo.

Meet Carolynn.
Carolynn // @branches.art
She is my Grandmother. She died many years before I was born & I am lucky enough to be her namesake. She came to me & gave me hope when l felt like giving up. I can’t describe it, & have a difficult time putting it into words, but she is there for me. She has answered my prayers, cried with me, smiled with me & cheered me on.
I spent 26 years of my life sitting on the sidelines of family history. It wasn’t until I made the choice to give it a try, that things started to change for me. Within that very first year of doing family history work, little by little I noticed the blessings that came.
Carolynn was the first memorable blessing that came from my family history efforts. She visited me, comforted me and answered a desperate prayer. Everyone needs a Carolynn, a guardian angel.
If I could give any advice, it would be to let go of your fears that come with the phrase “family history”. It can look different for you than it looks for me. It is an extremely personal journey. Ask in faith where you are needed and what can fit into your season. You may even find a guardian angel to help.
Jane. Jane is a name that was at the top of our baby names list when I was pregnant with each of our last 3 children. But even though we loved the name, it never made the final cut because we like to name our kids after family members or close friends and we didn’t know anyone named Jane personally.
Shelly // @goodmorningshelly
In September 2016, 3 months after the birth of my last child, I finally understood why that name kept standing out to me. Jane wanted me to find her.
After feeling impressed to finally dig in and learn how to research my family tree and find names to take to the Temple, I sat down with one of the Family History consultants in my ward. I’m one of those people who has a lot of their family tree already filled out so we had to go back pretty far. The first person that we found was Jane Elizabeth Clayton. She’s a distant cousin of mine.
Over the next couple weeks, I was able to find Jane’s husband, Alfred, and 11 of their 12 children. The day that my husband and I were able to be sealed for Jane and Alfred was such a special and spiritual experience.
I have felt particularly connected to Jane over the past few years. I have felt her angelic assistance, both since discovering her, and also I’ve been able to recognize her help with certain trials that I was going through, particularly during my last pregnancy.
I would love to someday discover a photo of her and some stories about her life. I look forward to meeting her on the other side of the veil someday.
#familyhistoryonthesabbath
Every week we will share a simple idea for bringing family history into your home on the Sabbath day. If you have ideas that you would like us to share, create an Instagram post about what family history you are doing on your sabbath day, TAG @seasonforfamily in your post and use the hashtag #familyhistoryonthesabbath .
To help us not be on social media all Sunday, we will share your ideas in our stories on the following Saturday night or Sunday morning in our stories. They will then be available for viewing on Sunday.
We think this will be a GREAT way to share ideas, but most importantly encourage those that feel like family history is overwhelming or too time consuming. We encourage you to share them on your pages so that more people can get in touch with the messages that we are sharing here.
#weescoutprompts
When you sign up for our Bi-Weekly Newsletter you will get 30 FREE Family History Prompts (questions to ask your family). These prompts are an EASY way to get started in recording your family’s history! If you use these prompts on social media, TAG @seasonforfamily and use the hashtag #weescoutprompts . We will share your prompts in our stories! We encourage you to share them on your pages so that more people can see how fun and simple family history can be!
An Example of a Prompt Post:
If your children could drive you anywhere they wanted, where do you think they drive you? Share a new or recent photo
💗
Alfie would probably drive me to Game Haven to play in a Pokémon league with him 😂 yes! They really exist
💗
Juliette would drive me to and force me though a haunted house #nevergonnahappen
💗
Scout would drive me to build a bear and make me buy her something 🤣
