Passing Down their Legacy of Faith

05.28.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

I read through a short biography of my great-great-great grandfather the other day. I read of his faith. His deep conviction of the gospel of Jesus Christ. His strength in the hardest of trials. I wished so deeply that I could have met him. I wondered if I could be a little bit like him. I wondered what he would have taught me if I had had the opportunity to sit on his knee as a child.

I thought of my grandfather, his great-grandson, who passed away a years ago. I used to sit on his knee. He taught me so much about the gospel on that soft, inviting little seat. He had such an amazing knowledge of, well, everything. But especially he loved to talk about the Savior and His teachings. He had an entire library full of books written by amazing men and women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He taught me to delve deep into my understanding of the gospel.

My Grandpa and I

I think now about my dad. He would often let me stay up late to discuss some doctrinal aspect of the gospel. I never got sick of hearing him talk about this passion of his. That same love of our Savior had been passed down to him.

I have to admit that even with all the names I have found, temple work competed, talks on family history and so forth, I have hardly read a story from any of my ancestors. I have been so focused on getting the work done. Not to mention, this line of my family has had SO much work done already I never even bothered to look through it. It was already “done”. How wrong I have been.

Two things became clear from reading these stories of my great-great-great grandfather. One, these men and women who came before us are of a powerful importance in my life. This deep love for the Savior and His teachings was passed down from those before me and has become a part of me now. Our ancestors’ faith, their experiences, their perspectives, their love is very much a part of each of us. Even some of their faults and shortcomings are passed down. The second thing that became VERY clear to me was that it is my RESPONSIBILITY to continue to pass down this legacy of faith to my children. My children need to hear these stories. They need to learn from these men and women who have already helped shape them a little into who they are. These ancestors aren’t just names. They are my family.

With this said, I am excited to introduce a series starting up next week called, #seasonforfamilyactivities It will be a way for us to share ideas to fill some of those long summer days coming up with activities to do together as a family. These activities will be fun and help you discover and pass down your own family legacy so that our ancestors won’t be forgotten but that they can be celebrated with us and in us.

What are some ways you have been inspired by the stories of your ancestors?

Carolynn

Meet Carolynn.

She is my Grandmother & died many years before I was born. I am lucky enough to be her namesake. She came to me & gave me hope when l felt like giving up. I can’t describe it, & have a difficult time putting it into words, but she is there for me. She has answered my prayers, cried with me, smiled with me & cheered me on.

I spent 26 years of my life sitting on the sidelines of family history. It wasn’t until I made the choice to give it a try, that things started to change for me. Within that very first year of doing family history work, little by little I noticed the blessings that came.

Carolynn was the first memorable blessing that came from my family history efforts. She visited me, comforted me and answered a desperate prayer. Everyone needs a Carolynn, a guardian angel.

If I could give any advice, it would be to let go of your fears that come with the phrase “family history”. It can look different for you than it looks for me. It is an extremely personal journey. Ask in faith where you are needed and what can fit into your season. You may even find a guardian angel to help. . .

Today I shared a connection with one of my ancestors, but we also want to hear about your connections! If you are interested in sharing, visit seasonforfamily.com/share and submit your story.

Let’s inspire each other ➳ #selfiewithanancestor #seasonforfamilystories Do you believe in guardian angels? Tell me in the comments below.

How I Told Her

05.24.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

As we celebrated Mother’s Day this week I think of my journey to motherhood. I struggled through infertility, but we were blessed with our beautiful daughter through adoption. I didn’t know many people who had adopted, and those that did all were very different in their approach to the subject. I didn’t have nine months to prepare for my baby to come, though, I’ve learned that nothing really prepares you to become a parent. However, I have been preparing my whole life to be a mother.

I knew that I wanted my children to always know how much I prayed for them to come to me and that I love them so much. I knew that I didn’t want my daughter to have a traumatic experience finding out that I did not give birth to her. In fact, I didn’t want her to have a memory of us telling her, I wanted her to always know that being adopted was a blessing and it was part of her own unique story. From the time that she was born I would tell her stories and I included her birth story. I told her about THAT phone call that changed our lives, and our drive to the town where she was going to be born. I told her about waiting in the quiet hospital hallway and hearing her first cry. I have tried to show her how unique she is and that her birth was no different. We celebrate her adoption day (Gottcha Day) anniversary as a family.

She is the child that made me a mother, but she is also part of another woman’s story, and I want her to always remember that. This way is not for all families of adoption, but it is what works for us. She is now thirteen years old and I believe that being open; and celebrating her story has brought us all closer as a family. Our stories are all important, it is what makes us the unique people we are. I

It can be easily forgotten that the simple act of sharing a story IS family history. My daughter and I have a special bond because of our story. What makes your story unique and how has sharing blessed your life and the lives of others?
