Are We Related?

06.17.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

This week’s #seasonforfamilyactivities idea is all about making fun connections! Family History can seem boring at times or if it’s not boring to you, it can be boring to those you are trying to get involved! This activity is guaranteed to be so much fun for kids, teens and adults alike.

I am going to share with you 2 ways to find out if and how you are related to those outside of your immediate family! Both ways do require a familysearch.org account that is connected to your deceased relatives.

1 – Finding Relations to Those Who Are in Close Proximity to You

If you would like to find relationships with people in the same room or close area as you, you and those around you need to download, open and login to the “FamilySearch Tree” App to your phone or tablet.

  • Android
  • IOS

Next, you and your friends will need to navigate to the Menu and select “Relatives Around Me” and tap “Scan for Friends”. That’s it, if you are related to anyone near you, your relationships will show!

2 – Finding Relations to Anyone with a FamilySearch Account

Do you have long distance friends that you’d love to find connections with?!? To check on these relationships, you’ll need to use Relative Finder on the computer (this is a website, not an App).

First, you’ll click on the “Login with FamilySearch” button, where you will login to your account.

Once you are logged in, you’ll come to a page like this where you can see your relations to celebrities, Political Figures, Latter-Day Saint Prophets, etc. This all on it’s own is fun!

In order to find relations to specific people (online friends, etc.), what you will need to do is Create a Group. You’ll do that by clicking on “Groups” and “Create” on the top right menu bar.

From here, you will Create a Group Name and Password.

After your group has been created, all you need to do is share your group name and password with anyone that would like to join! To join, you do need to login (like in the previous few steps) and click on “Groups” and “Join”.

Now, when you are on the homepage of Relative Finder, and after your friends start joining, you will be able to see your relationships! Make sure to that the checkbox next to the group that you want to look at is the only one selected, so that you can start seeing those connections. (Shown below)

Also, Make sure to click on the names so that you can see how you are related!

We hope that you’ll try these 2 methods out and let us know how it goes! Use this as an activity for parties, a Family Home Evening (invite another family or 2), Youth Activities, Church Lessons, etc.

ARE WE RELATED TO YOU? Want to find out?

We have started a Relative Finder group on our Facebook Page! Come check it out. Here is the link to our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/seasonforfamily/
and after you are in the group find the post with this image to get the Relative Finder group and password.

Digitizing

06.02.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

This weeks #familyhistoryonthesabbath idea is coming from the discussions that have been going on in our Season for Family Facebook Group! If you haven’t joined, please join us! We are hoping that it will be a great place for sharing ideas, getting help, helping others and just cheering each other on in our family history journey! To join us, visit —> facebook.com/groups/seasonforfamily

There are several women on the Facebook Group including myself that are working on digitizing! This includes scanning photos, newspaper clippings, documents, recipes, etc. This is a GREAT way to participate in family history. It also does not have to be overly difficult or time consuming. Did you know that you can even scan documents with your phone??

Later today in the Facebook Group, I am going to show you my “station” that I have set up in my room. I have tons to digitize with not a lot of time available, so my strategy has been to create a small space that is set up and ready to go. This way, I can sit down and work on it only 10-15 minutes at a time, making it FIT into my busy schedule.

Share your digitizing tips and tricks below! What scanners or apps do you use? Do you have any questions about digitizing?

Remember, every week we will share a simple idea for bringing family history into your home on the Sabbath day. We would LOVE for you to share your ideas, tag @seasonforfamily in your Instagram post and use the hashtag #familyhistoryonthesabbath

To help us not be on social media all Sunday, we will share your ideas on the following Saturday night or Sunday morning in our stories. They will then be available for viewing on Sunday.

Family History Facebook Group

05.25.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Family history can be incredibly intimidating! Today, we are here to tell you that WE want to help! Camille from @themommygenealogist is our Facebook lady and she is going to be heading up a FREE Facebook Support Group. In the support group, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and get help from Camille, the whole Season for Family Team and other members of the group. This is a space where you will be able to openly ask questions, help each other, celebrate victories, and just get to know each other better!
But seriously, if you are feeling intimidated by family history… the truth is, you are probably already involved in family history work and don’t even realize it!
Do you take photos of your children and post them on Social Media, write in a journal, bake your Grandmother’s favorite cookie recipe, share stories of your childhood with your children? If you answered yes to any of those things or something similar, you ARE doing family history!
We are not suggesting you stop there and call it good. We only suggest that you start a NEW family history journey by first, GIVING YOURSELF CREDIT for the work you already do! A positive outlook on family history, is a first step to qualify for the real, tangible blessings that come from INTENTIONALLY participating in family history work. If you can have a more positive view toward this work, it WILL become easier.
Whatever you do, don’t feel discouraged! Don’t feel overwhelmed! Together, we can figure out where we are INDIVIDUALLY needed in this work. Believe it or not, we are not all meant to be grave hunting, census finding, genealogists! There is a place for YOU in this family history world that you will LOVE, we promise!

The Hand of God- Yongsung Kim

Now tell us, what kind of family history do you ALREADY do? Share in the comments, let’s celebrate that! And don’t forget to join our new Facebook Group! Come introduce yourself! Find us at: facebook.com/groups/seasonforfamily
