Remembering the Pioneers

07.17.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

If you’re a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints then you know why July 24th is important. It’s Pioneer Day! This is a day when we celebrate the pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley.

After many years of persecution and being forced from their homes, all for exercising their right to believe in God and worship Him how they wanted to, the Latter-day Saints finally found a place where they could settle down and call home. This was exciting and significant. It’s worth celebrating.

Their trials and hardships are also worth remembering and regarding with deep respect. We stand on the shoulders of giants – faithful men, women, and children that were willing to give up everything and pave the way for us to have the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

I would encourage you to spend some time this month researching and learning more about your own pioneer ancestors, if you have any. And if not, learn about the pioneers in general.

Invite your children to join you. This can be a lot of fun! Create tangible experiences. This is the second year that my children and I have spent the month of July learning about the pioneers and we have had amazing experiences. Head over to @goodmorningshelly on Instagram if you want to see what we’ve been up to and get some ideas for yourself. 🙂

Photo Shoot on the Sabbath

07.14.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

Family history involves preserving the present. One way my siblings, cousins, and I would do this was through photo shoots on the sabbath! We would gather at our house, walk down the road to the Laie Hawaii Temple or drive to a beach and taken photos together. My sister was the talented photographer behind all of our amazing photos and she captured our lives perfectly in those photos.

As we have all grown and lived our lives, we now have the opportunity to look back and share the stories at the time through the images taken. I’m forever grateful that photography is around to preserve the joyfulness of my family’s life.

Use whatever skills you have to make family history work your own. And never forget how important it is to actively look to the past and consistently preserve our present.

Throw an Ancestor Birthday Party!

07.01.2019 by season // Leave a Comment

This week for our #seasonforfamilyactivies post, I want to share one of my favorite #familyhomeevening activities. It is so fun and kids of all ages will LOVE it!

Who doesn’t love a great birthday party?! The basic idea for this activity is to host a Birthday for your Ancestors that were born within a certain period of time (that day, that month, or season… really whatever period of time you choose).

This #FHE activity is guaranteed to be a hit with the kids. Even better for you… the activity can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make it. If your kids love it, hold a party once a month, once a season, once a year or just when ever you feel like it.

To make this crazy easy for you, I have created this into a FREE printable FHE lesson plan! The printable has all the tips and ideas for making your parties so easy and fun!

Download the Free FHE Lesson Plan Here

Check out some photos from one of my family’s Ancestor Parties, we always have so much fun!
Tip: Use LEFTOVER party supplies to make it cheap and easy! I never buy new party supplies, we always just mix and match the leftovers from our real birthday parties.
